The Church of Christ at Lancaster, Kentucky was organized in the early 1800's, the nine persons who were enrolled, viz: John Jennings and wife, and eldest sister Fanny Edmonson; William Stirman and wife; Mrs. Polly Sartain, wife of Elijah Sartain; Elias Myers, Esom Ballinger and Lucy Price. Mrs. Lucy Price confessed her faith in Christ, and was the first person in Garrard County who made the “good confession” with a view of going into an organization free from all human creeds and confessions of faith.
When the day appointed for the organization arrived, the meeting was held at the residence of John Jennings, persons already named then gave themselves to the Lord and to one another in a solemn covenant. Thus, the church of Christ was constituted, with the old and new testament as the only rule of faith and practice.
During the next few decades the church continued to grow in Garrard County and many other congregations came about. The Antioch Church was started, Scotts Fork and Bethel Church of Christ.
The present congregation of the Maple Avenue Church of Christ was organized in the year 1921, and assembled for worship at that time in a rented hall. Most of the thirty-two original members were former members of the Scotts Fork, Antioch, and the Bethel Churches of Christ.
On June 25th, 1923, Cronley & Bernice Broadus deeded a 48 foot by 110 foot lot on the South side of Maple Avenue in Lancaster to the Trustees of the Church of Christ; J.W Sanders, B.P. Grow and B.F. Broadus. According to a newspaper article dated August 16, 1923 it states that “the Church of Christ building is under construction on Maple Avenue will be finished and ready for worship in one month.” The article says the building”will be finished in grey stucco and will have furnace heat.”
Records from 1925 show the following are Original Charter Members: Cronley Broadus, his wife Burnice, a son, Earl and his wife Elizabeth and two daughters Lilian and Hazel. J.W. Sanders, his sons J.I and A., four daughters, Peachie, Pearl, Beatrice and Jewell, also a nephew Thompson Sanders. Frank Broadus, his wife Lizzie, four sons, Elgin, Emmitt, Basil, Lewis and two daughters; Ruth and Bertha. E.P. Grow, his wife, Sally, and their two daughters, Irene and Lucille.
The records from 1925 shows Cronley Broadus and family, J.W. Sanders and family were from Scotts Fork Church. Frank Broadus and family were from the Bethel Church. E.P. Grow and family were from Antioch Church. Leslie Reynolds and family and Tivas Preston and family were members in the year 1925 but bno record of their previous church. The records from 1927 show Thomas Ray and family were from the Lancaster Christian Church; many descendants of this family are members today. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Simpson, Sr. came into the church in 1941 during a gospel meeting helf by Gus Nichols under a large tent on Campbell Street with many of this family still being active members today. Emmitt Broadus, one of the original members served 14 years as a missionary in China. The elders now oversee the Go Teach The Word mission work to Guyana, South America.
The church building was remodeled in 1957 adding classroom space and an office. The minister’s home on Lynnwood Drive was purchased in April 1965. The Farnau property next door was purchased in 1992 for use of classes, fellowship meetings, and extra parking. The new building now sits on that site and was completed in 2005. The original was building renovated into a fellowship hall with kitchen.
